Hammer Time!! Gangnam Style!!

I had to.  I just had to.  As hard as it is to get back to work after a nice, tryptophan induced holiday, it's easy to smile at Hammer practicing for his AMA performance with K-Pop sensation, PSY.  For a man in his fifties.. wow.. he can still move, and PSY wasn't half bad himself.

Both artists have a special place in my heart, bringing me back to two memorably crazy but happy places in my life.  I still remember the Hammer pants that I copped in 5th grade at Tinker AFB's base exchange, being the only girl to have them in my multi-ethnic crew dubbed by my sister, "The Posse".  Fast forward fifteen years later where I spent the most life changing, culture-shockingly fun year long tour in Osan AB, South Korea only to come home to find that K-Pop was all the rage in the states.

I don't care what anyone says.  These guys are talented, and this mashup was dope.

This has been your Cut of the Week, brought to you by (ficky ficky) Loft Remix.  Have a good week!

Thanksgiving Leftovers

Everything about our loft is small, including our fridge.  Fitting all the leftovers we took home from my parents' was no easy task, but remixing them the next day was a lot of fun, especially since our family's Thanksgiving feast always includes a variety of food.  Here are a few things I put together:

Leftover mashed potatoes with diced up pieces of my Auntie's garlic shrimp, added more garlic and a few more spices, topped with bacon.  Droooool.  My boyfriend LOVED it.  Going to make this again, for sure.
Hashed up Daddy's turkey into breakfast burritos with potatoes, scrambled eggs, and onions paired with my Ceviche, and mom's Ginataan (a Filipino dessert that means 'done with coconut milk').  Oh, and leftover cupcake toppers to hold the burritos together ;)
Turkey hash quesadilla for my son and leftover bundt cake.

I'd love to hear how you remixed your Turkey Day leftovers!

A High Thanksgiving

Started my favorite holiday right by running a 5k in the Nitro Turkey Run  in beautiful Point Pinole with great friends.  In support of the Foodbank for Contra Costa and Solano County, this family friendly run is fun for all ages, and when I say all ages, I mean I was pushing myself trying to keep up with small children and folks twice my age :)

The race was absolutely breath taking... and the views were nice too ;)  I haven't been very good at keeping up with my running, so I'm counting this run as the beginning of a chain of 'em until I reach my ultimate goal.  Distance running is a lot different than the standards I have to meet for the military.  While it's a lot more enjoyable in my eyes, it also takes a different kind of training and mentality.

First stretch by the ocean.  Felt like I was in a running photography club with Zoey Deschanel.

Saying goodbye to my Nike Dual Fusion ST's after this run, at least ones with this kind of terrain. Although they are good for people with low arches and excessive pronation, I'd say they're much better for running on a smooth track.  I still love them (with their cute neon pink, green, and gray color scheme) but will reserve them for work shoes and/or running around the block.

This was right after conquering a massive hill.  I told myself if this turkey guy WITH a stroller could do it, I BETTER do it.

They say runners get a certain "high" also known as the second wind; a feeling of euphoria experienced when endorphins are released during physical activity.  I love it!  It always seems to kick in right after the moment I just want to give up.. as long as I keep going that is.  It helped to get me to a place where I could meditate and pray for all that I am thankful for.  I was that weirdo that was smiling and tearing up during the third hill.

During the last half, especially after running up the hills, I just wanted to walk!  But I stuck with this gentleman and made it to the end at a steady pace.  I wonder if he knew?

Speaking of high....... LOL!

Mom's beautiful vase

True story!  I walked in my parents' house, unfinished ceviche in my hand, asking for a couple lemons from their tree.  Mom shows me this... ahem... vase and says, "Isn't it pretty?"  I was SPEECHLESS.  All I could do was look at my dad, like was this really happening???  All he could do was shake his head.  Was my mom using angry sarcasm after finding it in my brother's room???  But wait, he doesn't smoke... does he??? OMG!!!!  She continues,  "I found it!!  Right outside the grocery store!"  Grandma chimes in, "Yah!! Eet's so prrrittty, it's antik!  People pay lots ob mahney por dat!"  O  M  G.  Long story short, it's still in my mom's kitchen waiting for the right kind of bud flower.

Cousin Lyle got the party going!

I LOVE MY FAMILY!!!!  Never a dull moment, that's for sure.  Thanksgiving started being my favorite holiday when I came back to California after my first term in the military.  I was pleasantly surprised to find that my family had started a new tradition.  During the blessing of the meal, we each say something we are thankful for.  I can hardly get through it without getting watery eyed, especially this year.

Happy Thanksgiving to you!

Love in the Fall

Fall... My favorite season!  Aside from it being scarf/hat/layering weather, I get to come home to wonderful surprises like these:

I have to admit my bf would do something like this "just because" (aside from his crazy sweet tooth, hence the big box rather than the adorable single servings that Nothing Bundt Cakes has available).  In this case, there is a "because".  He knows that settling into my new job in mental health, as rewarding as it is and blessed as I am to have it, has had it's rough moments to say the least.  This is his way of reminding me to enjoy what I love, and one of those things has been sharing life (and delicious bundt cakes) with him since three years ago in the Fall:

I found love in the Fall,
And it did not hurt at all
I found sunshine and flowers
Soft Summer showers
I can feel my heart touch my Adam's Apple
Didn't even know I needed it
I found love

I love that our song is from one of my son's favorite shows, Yo Gabba Gabba  :)

Meet Ryan aka Rydell aka Sugarfoot

Happy Fall.

Aca-scuse me??

We Are Young - Pentatonix

Here's something fun to start off your week.  I was lucky enough to celebrate my birthday this year with loved ones at The Great American Music Hall in San Franciso to drink and watch PTX.  AMAZING!  So amazing that I decided I can't have a blog about the remixes of life without including remixes of music, or in this case a cover song.

What's the difference?  A remix, in general, is a "reinterpretation of a pre-existing song".  (Navas, 2012)  It's basically an alternative version based on the original by extending it, adding or subtracting material, changing the tempo or any other musical component. A cover is a new performance or "recording of a song that was recorded or made popular by somebody else".  Duh, right?

I'm no where near musical nor do I claim to have an expert opinion on anything.  But can I just say, Pentatonix is pure AWESOMENESS?!?!  As an a capella group they redefine the meanings of remix and cover using nothing but their mouths.  No audio mixers, no synthesizers, no instruments whatsoever.  Just pure vocals and beat box style drum and bass.  Within one song they literally mix it up, changing the tempo by jumping from a soft ballad or catchy pop song to a Reggae or Latin infused beat.  I don't even know if I'm explaining that right, lol!  Just watch the video above, and you'll see what I mean.

I'm sure I'll be posting more vids of PTX and other musical remixes every Sunday night to start your week off right ;)

Introducing Loft Remix (ficky ficky)

Oh hey.  Welcome to my blog.  I'm finally blogging, whaaat?

So what the heck does Loft Remix mean?  Well, it took living in a small loft above a garage with my preschool aged son to realize that all we have at any given moment is truly all we need.  With a bit of creativity, we can take anything that life offers and mix it up to work for us.

Stay tuned for more remixes about life.. inside and outside our loft :)
